A little bit about Tatterdemalion.

Denise Anne Heywood is Tatterdemalion, or perhaps it should be the other way round.

A little bit about me.

I am by profession a costume cutter and maker. I have been fortunate enough to have been employed in the world of Film, Television, Theatre and Opera for over 25 years, working along side many acclaimed and award winning costume designers.

Some of my recent work has involved making costumes for Charlotte Hope in The Spanish Princess, Poppy Corby-Tuech in The Collection, Jodie Comer in The White Princess and Cara Delevingne in Carnival Row.

In March the world of film and television, like so many others in the arts, came to an abrupt and complete standstill with productions cancelled or postponed indefinitely.

It was my daughter’s request for a kimono robe that was the inspiration for Tatterdemalion.

Working in ‘costume’ for film and television over the years has deepened my love of beautful and rare fabrics, and hunting down and sourcing them whilst time consuming is immensly satisfying.

Many of the fabrics I use are sourced directly from India, often vintage saris, and as such are usually a single piece - a shame, I wish I could get more of some fabrics as they are just so beautiful. On the plus side however it does mean that each piece is unique - you will see occaisionally I can create a scarf from the piece as well, but that is all.

If there is a kimono that you’ve fallen in love with and it’s sold I am happy to try and source something similar. If this is something that you would like to discuss please contact me directly.
